About
Armored Souls Survivors is our submission for the GMTK Game Jam 2024.
What you are about to play is a derivative work from the game we are developing, Armored Souls, reflavoured in a "Survivors" style for fun.
Please enjoy this little experiment of ours, and if you are curious about Armored Souls, please take a look at it.
Thanks, and have fun!
PS: The game supports both the keyboard and controller, but the controller should work better as we've tested it the longest, so it's what we recommend using.
PPS: Disclaimer for Armored Souls players.
First of all, a huge THANK YOU for your continued support!
As stated above, this is our submission for the GMTK Game Jam 2024.
Just to clarify, this is NOT a new game we are commencing, but a short demo we put together for the jam as the theme (Built to Scale) resonated strongly with the Motherboard system, and we wanted to experiment with it from a different angle for a few days. By the time you will read this, we will already be 100% full-focus back at work on Armored Souls.
At the same time, we took the opportunity of this jam to experiment with a couple of things we have been working on, but that don't have the level of quality (yet) to be ready for Armored Souls. Please take anything new you see on Survivors as a work in progress, since a) it is, and b) it might have been tweaked to fit the Survivors setting.
Things WIP for Armored Souls:
- AUTO mod [Input]
- Orbital Strike mod [Weapon]
- Tendrils mod [Tool]
- Upgrade System
- Materials System [Metal]
Changes and features only for the demo (NOT in Armored Souls):
- Energy Costs were removed
- Many Inputs and other mods were removed to simplify gameplay
- Augments were fused with Links to simplify gameplay
- Being able to carry materials (Metal) back to HQ on death
- Motherboard editable from Main Menu removed to simplify gameplay
- XP and Level-Up System
- Survival System
Features
- Auto-Battle: Survive the desert wasteland overrun by powerful machines.
- Level Up: Collect parts and harvest resources for your mechanical upgrades.
- Build: Use the Motherboard to connect enemy pieces and make them part of your arsenal.
- Scale: everything stacks with (almost) everything! Make your projectiles bigger, your legs faster... experiment!
- Forge: Use resources to improve your starting Links permanently.
- Be a machine: Design your attack patterns with powerful macros and auto modes to achieve maximum efficiency. Bip.
Motherboard
The Motherboard is our interface to manage all character customization features.
The Motherboard is a rectangular space where all features of the player are plugged: controls, weapons, armor, legs, passives - everything hardware or software is installed (and visually represented) through the Motherboard.
The Motherboard is made of square slots. Every slot of the Motherboard can host one feature (mod) or be unusable (broken).
A series of Input, Link and Weapon, Tool, or Motion mod makes a circuit. Mods not in a circuit are inactive (except for Chips). For the circuit to work, all mods need to be correctly aligned based on the direction of their ports.
Mods
Mod is the generic term for any piece plugged into the motherboard.
This game uses Weapon, Tool, Motion, Link, Input and Chip mods.
Links
Links connect other types of mods to create circuits.
In this game, all Links are T-shaped, meaning they can connect two or three mods, and are fitted with an upgrade (Cooldown, Damage, Duration, Range, Size, Speed) that will affect all the corresponding values of the mods in the circuit. Incredibly powerful if used correctly!
Inputs
Inputs represent the buttons you must press on your keyboard or controller to activate circuits.
In this game, there are Inputs designed for walking (WASD Keys, Arrow Keys, Controller Left Stick) and AUTO Inputs for auto-shooting.
Motion
Motion mods are pieces of equipment that allow movement.
Every aspect of your motion mods (speed, range, etc...) can be enhanced or modified using Links.
Without a motion mod attached to a walking input through a circuit you can not move.
Weapon
Weapons are pieces of offensive equipment used to inflict damage against enemies.
Every aspect of your weapons (damage, firing speed, range, etc...) can be enhanced or modified using Links.
Tool
Tools are pieces of support equipment used to generate statuses, buffs, or other useful effects.
Tools can enhance weapons and motion mods, and every aspect of your tools (damage, duration, cooldown, etc...) can be enhanced or modified using Links.
Chips
Chips are passive mods.
In this game, the only chip increases Health.
They do not require Inputs and Links to work, but activate as soon as they are plugged into the motherboard (they are stand-alone circuits).
Armored Souls Survivors 101
Here are the major things to keep in mind!
Legs make you move
Moving them around to make space is okay, but don't remove them! Keep them attached if you want to be able to move around!
Chips just work
Just plug them into the Motherboard to receive the effects.
Use Links to create circuits
You can not connect two non-Link mods directly. Only Links connect other types of mods.
Rotate mods to align ports and connect them
Links stack, circuits matter
The same Link can be used multiple times in sequence for stronger effects. Links strengthen only the circuit they are connected to. Decide if you prefer more, weaker circuits or fewer, stronger ones.
Use Metals collected to improve Links!
Is the swarm too tough?
Go to the Upgrade tab and upgrade your mods. Upgrading will improve their major statistic permanently.

Cool, saving to play later!
Made a build with high fire rate that shredded everything, very cool little survivors
Some new mods, yay
bit easy but nice
A nice entry! Neat system. With a bit more polish this could be something! Good luck.
